Overview
The Department of Environment and Climate studies was formed in 2015 with the introduction of BSc in Environment and Climate Studies. There are three programmes under this department namely PhD in Climate Studies which was introduce in 2022, BSc in Environment and Climate Studies introduced in 2015 and the upcoming programme BSc in Earth Science to be introduce in 2027.
Aim
This department introduces students to a variety of fundamental subjects related to climate and environment focusing on the major elements of environment (land, water, air and living organisms).The department then advances towards developing the skills in assessing the health of the environment and impacts of climate changes on various aspects of environmental entities.Students are familiarized with the concepts of environmental science to provide them with the scope to develop knowledge and skills covering all attributes of the environment and enable them to attain scientific and technological abilities to answer fundamental questions with regard to anthropogenic impacts on environment. It also geared to enhance the ability to apply the knowledge and skills and develop proficiency to find solutions to environmental concerns. Such knowledge and skills can be achieved using current technologies and scientific research approaches.The department covers environmental sustainability and climate change issues i.e. problems caused by interactions of human systems and earth systems as the impact of climate change and deteriorating environmental conditions are increasing concern all over the world and there is need to understand the implications of such issues.
Career Related Opportunities
These programme offers a wide range of career opportunities both nationally and internationally. At the national level, the graduates can be employed in National Environment Commission, Ministry of Labour and Human Resources, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Information and Communication. This is because students will be equipped with knowledge and skills pertaining to project management, entrepreneurship, research, personal development and communications skills, which would help them to work in varying environments and in a diligent way. Students will gain substantial knowledge and skills on environmental laws and policies, climate change adaptation, mitigation in terms of systems thinking and these knowledge and skills help them to get employment at various agencies such as World Wildlife Fund, United NationsDevelopment Programme and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.Graduates can also be employed in non-governmental organizations such as Royal Society forProtection of Nature, Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation, Clean Bhutan and various other Civil Society Organizations. The programme also aims to improve the employability of the graduates including enhancement of self-employability potential and entrepreneurial aptitudes and fill the resource gap especially in the Bhutanese context.
